Fall 2020: Conversation Series

In collaboration with California Humanities, the Oakland/Saint-Denis partners will launch a series of public dialogues in Oakland to present and discuss some of the issues that the cooperation project has been surfacing, and hear from the artists, developers, and storytellers who can help make a difference in our cities. Fall 2020/Spring 2021: Spaces

SPACES is an immersive initiative imagined by Kaimera Productions that merges contemporary performance with the ancient art of storytelling. Each piece will be created and performed with the local communities that give Oakland and Saint-Denis their strength and identity. In 2020, Simón Adinia Hanukai will lead a SPACES performance in the Basilique of Saint-Denis (Fall 2020) and at the Oakland City Hall (early 2021).

May 2020: The Short Documentary

Oakland/Saint-Denis: the documentary is now available ! Directed by Camille Servan-Schreiber and produced by California Humanities, the 14-minute video is retelling the stories of the two learning expeditions organized in Oakland and Saint-Denis in October and November 2019. This inspiring documentary beautifully highlights the strength and vitality of the two cities and its inhabitants as well as their capacity and willingness to change things for the better.

November 2020: National Humanities Conference

The project Oakland/Saint-Denis - introduced by California Humanities - has been selected to be presented at the National Humanities Conference in November 2020, in Indianapolis! Every year, the conference brings together representatives from colleges, universities, state humanities councils, cultural institutions, and other community-based organizations to explore approaches to deepening the public’s engagement with the humanities. More information to come later!

Fall 2020: The Publication

Co-written by Californian and French partners, the collective production will come out in fall 2020 with a two-fold challenge: acknowledge the intercultural comprehension between the two cultures and the different practices and share economic/ cultural/ juridical solutions and innovations aimed to be modeled on a large scale. November 2019: Learning Expedition in Oakland

A month after the learning expedition in Saint-Denis, the French delegation flew to Oakland to confront their practices to Californian innovative models. From 12-15 November, French and American artists, architects and urban planners resumed the discussion started in Saint-Denis over workshops, working sessions, and walking tours.

July 2019: Vincent Courtois’ Residency / “Love of Life”

During his residency in July 2019, the Cello-virtuoso Vincent Courtois conceived an album inspired by Oaklander writer Jack London’s novel Martin Eden. This album was recorded in Oakland and released in 2020. He also imagined, during his stay in the Bay Area, the show “Oakland”, to be performed in 2020 in Paris, along with actor Pierre Baux.

July 2018: Francois Bon’s Residency /
“A Description of Oakland”

French writer and translator François Bon was the guest of the writing residency A Room with a View in July 2018 to conduct his project entitled A Description of Oakland. He took this opportunity to describe and question Oakland as an "urban laboratory", to meet the people who are transforming this artistic, urbanistic and social territory, and to explore Oakland's singularities. He has documented his observations through filming and writings.
